In this class, I taught the students how to upload their Microsoft Word book document to Lulu.com to have it professionally printed. First, I created a new account on Lulu.com. Then I created a new paperback book project. I showed the different book printing sizes and options. Then I uploaded a sample Microsoft Word document. I also showed how to use Lulu’s book cover designer. Finally, I showed how Lulu automatically creates an online product page where people can read snippets of your book, read or post ratings and comments, and buy your book.

Tonight, I showed how to create a WordPress account on WPWebHost.  This service offers WordPress hosting for about $5 to $8 a month which is a very good price.

In this week’s class, I used an overhead LCD projector to show how to format your book using Microsoft Word.  I showed how to add and change page numbers, how to create and apply styles to your text, the difference between serif and sans-serif fonts and what they’re both used for, and I showed the class a book template for a 6″x9″ book.

How to Publish a Children’s Book

Last year alone the children’s book market exceeded $4 billion in sales. The key to breaking into this lucrative market is to learn what kids are interested in reading and to convince an editor that you’re the best and only writer who can give it to them.

Week 14: Marketing, Promotion & Sales

Every book author, whether published or self-published, must market and promote their book. This isn’t as hard as it sounds. It’s just a matter of turning your passion for your topic into a vocal passion that is focused on marketing, sales and promotion. In the final teaching class of the Book Writing course, I taught the class 15 powerful ways to market, promote and sell their new book.

Week 13: Printing Your Book

Using a computer LCD projector, I took the class on an online tour showing how to print and publish their books through Lulu.com. The class was able to see how easy it is to upload their manuscript and prepare it for printing.

Week 12: Formatting Your Book

In this week’s class, I used an overhead LCD projector to show how to format your book using Microsoft Word.  I showed how to add and change page numbers, how to create and apply styles to your text, the difference between serif and sans-serif fonts and what they’re both used for, and I showed the class a book template for a 6″x9″ book.

Week 10: Publishing

In this class, I taught about self-publishing and compared it to various publishing options. It can be difficult to become published through a book company unless you meet certain criteria. But self-publishing allows you to get into the market immediately. The downside, of course, is that you have to be your own marketer.

Today is an in-class writing day.  Bring your pen, paper, laptop, and angel of revelation and let’s get your first chapter started so you’ll be ready to print it in book form in a few weeks.

Week 8: Paragraphs

A paragraph is a collection of sentences related to a single idea, statement or topic. A paragraph explains a chapter’s sub-heading, just like a sub-heading explains a book’s chapter. Everything you’ve learned about using chapters and sub-headings to sequentially explain teaching concepts or events in an autobiography also applies to paragraphs.

Week 7: Outlining

One of the best tools you’ll have as you write your book is an outline. This will act as your road map, helping you navigate a complex city and ensuring you never get lost. Learn the 10 steps to write an outline and 6 brainstorming methods to get your ideas in order.

Week 6: Research & Chapter Headings

This week’s class featured two different topics.  Both are relatively short so I decided to combine them.  First, I spoke about Research, then talked about Chapter Headings & Sub-Headings.

Research

I taught about the six basic steps for researching a topic for a teaching book.

Week 5: Defining Your Book Parameters

This week, I talked about how to define the parameters of your book.  I handed out a 10-page worksheet with instructions and several forms that need to be filled out.  The results of this worksheet will be a powerful tool when creating your outline and writing your book.

Before you start writing, you should know your theme.  You’ll also need to know the type of person (the audience) who is interested in reading a book about this theme.  Now you can come up with a list of keywords to help you write a premise statement that will be proven in your book.  You’ll come up with a list of questions and answers that need to be asked of your premise statement.  Finally, you’ll want to identify the writing style you’re going to use so you stay consistent.

Week 4: The Book Writing Process

In Week 4, I taught the students about the book writing process and how necessary it is to spend some time preparing for the writing process before starting to write.  Many people start writing a book too soon but do so without a plan.  Before they know it, they’re lost in a sea of writing fragments with no idea where to go next and very little structure on which to build their book.

10 Ways to Kill Your Book-Writing Vision

To be a book author, you must have a clear vision. But along the way, there may come temptations to water down your vision or slow your progress because of fears.

Week 3: Writing Accountability Partners

Writing Accountability Partners are a great resource for aspiring book authors. In this session, I taught the students the benefits of writing partners, how the partners can coach the author and ask “dangerous questions”, and I demonstrated a coaching session with author Heather Wiese.

As book authors in the kingdom of God, we must live from and act upon these core beliefs. We should be boldly declaring these truths over ourselves!

  1. I will not let fear keep me from my destiny.

Overcoming Fears & Obstacles to Book Writing

No matter what fears or obstacles stand in our way as book authors, we must never give up until we have achieved our goal.

Being a book author may not always be easy.  In fact, there will be times when it may be very hard.  Our vision, passion, and fearless determination is what separates us as book authors from everyone else who just “wants to write a book someday.”  We must be committed to our own vision!

Week 2: Fears & Obstacles

In Week 2, I talked about the most common fears and obstacles people have about writing a book. As book authors, we cannot let fear keep us from our destiny. We must have a strong, clear vision that will enable us to keep our eyes on our target as we push through any obstacle that gets in our way.

Week 1: Introduction

I introduced the students to myself and the book-writing class, then began telling them their identity: the students are now book authors. I promised that every student will be a book author if they remain committed to their vision. I gave them my expectations but also encouraged their dreams.

Book-Writing Class

The 15-week Book Writing Class is a huge success! We have almost 200 people attending on a weekly basis, every one of whom is about to be a book author. The level of passion, excitement and vision in the room each week is contagious. God’s power is present to be the “wind in our sails” as we seek after the destiny He’s placed inside of us.
